Between 2015 and 2016, I had the privilege of experiencing one of the most exciting and creative chapters of my photography journey. It was during this time that I joined fellow photographer Jaco Herbst on a trip to Ponta do Ouro, Mozambique, staying at Camp Leatherback.
This wasn’t just a holiday — it was an opportunity to explore new styles, grow as an artist, and collaborate with an amazing group of models.

Throughout the journey, I worked with talented women like Anja, Carien, Cara, BV, Belinda, and Joanie. Each model brought her own spark to the camera:
Remembering Joanie
This journey is especially important to me because of Joanie. She wasn’t just a model; she was a true friend, collaborator, and source of encouragement.
Joanie gave me advice when I needed it, had the patience to listen to my ideas, and helped me shape them into something real. She was funny, kind, and full of life, always bringing joy and energy to every shoot. Her pure smile could light up a room, and her passion for life was contagious.Tragically, Joanie passed away in a car accident. Writing this blog is my way of keeping her memory alive. The photos we created together — and the memories behind them — are part of her legacy. Through her artistry, patience, and kindness, she left an imprint not only on my photography but also on my heart.
Legendary Dogs of Mozambique
A special memory from the trip was meeting the legendary dogs of Ponta do Ouro. These dogs, once abandoned, learned to survive on their own — even hunting fish in the ocean. Despite their struggles, they were gentle and kind, a true reminder of resilience and survival. Capturing them with my lens was as memorable as working with the models themselves.
Behind the Camera
I worked with my Canon 5D Mark III, using lenses like the Canon 50mm f/1.8 and Sigma 35mm Art. I didn’t tie myself to fixed settings — instead, I experimented, adjusting shutter speeds, apertures, and lighting to match the mood of each moment. Some shoots took place in natural light by the beach, others in camp with studio-style setups.
